Transportation

Bus #400 links the Nice airport to Vence (last station), which is at 12 km. La Colle sur Loup is a village close to Vence, and bus #400 drives through (there are two bus stops at La Colle sur Loup). There is also a local bus #46 between Vence and La Colle sur Loup, which stops right in front of La Bergerie, but it may not work after Sept. 3. The walk between the #400 bus stop and La Bergerie Belambra center is 1100 meters (see link to local map below).

Accomodation

Participants will be accomodated in flats with 2 bedrooms and a bathroom (1 participant per bedroom unless otherwise specified). The organizers have only booked 30 rooms. Hence participants need to contact organizers because space is limited, if they have not already been invited. If some participant wishes to stay before and/or after the workshop, please contact directly La Bergerie center (see contact above).
Participants who have not been invited will be charged 90 euros per day for the 3 days. The additional fee for a participant to stay more than 3 days is the following: 79 euros for a full day including breakfast lunch and dinner, 64 euros with only one lunch or dinner, and 49 euros for the night alone with breakfast. Additional lunch taken without additional night is charged 28 euros. These fares also apply to accompanying persons who do not attend the workshop. Please contact directly La Bergerie center for reservations; reservations can be made the first day of arrival only if space is available.

Scope

In the frame of international programs of CNRS, DFG and RFBR institutes, this workshop aims at gathering researchers of three countries: France, Germany, and Russia, around the topics of separation of variables,  tensor decompositions, and applications.

Separation of variables is a fundamental concept in mathematics (multi-variate Fourier series, interpolation, analytical methods for PDEs, approximation theory, multi-linear algebra, matrix theory etc.). In many applications it also serves as a useful model for data (singular value decomposition, multi-way factor analysis, higher-order statistics etc.). This concept is behind some very fruitful recent developments in numerical methods including multi-pole methods for solving integral equations and allied algebraic approaches of hierarchical, multilevel, mosaic-skeleton, semi-separable and quasi-separable  matrices.

In modern multi-dimensional problems, it is recognized that separation of variables is a key to circumvent the curse of dimensionality. However, the very concept appears in various forms with entirely different capabilities. Investigation of possible data representation forms and their capabilities is a paramount research topic in multi-dimensional problems. Lately it has been under thorough study by the applicants in France (tensor ranks, symmetric tensors, factorizations of multivariate polynomials, relations to algebraic geometry), Germany (analytical tensor approximations, Tucker-canonical formats, quantum chemistry applications) and Russia (tensor-train (TT) decompositions, robust TT recompression, TT cross interpolation, fast algebraic operations in tensor formats, multi-variate computations without Monte Carlo methods).

Registration

Registration consists of two stages: "Preregistration" and "Confirmation". Your registration becomes effective only after: (1) the administration has checked that you preregistration is not fake, and (2) you have validated with a "Confirmation". Registration will be closed on August 15, 2010.
Preregistration      Confirmation

NB:
Only participants of the three abovementioned countries can apply for a financial support, by choosing the "3-day Trilateral coop." rate in the preregistration form. This registration includes: the dinners and nights of September 7, 8 and 9th, and breakfasts and lunches for 8, 9 and 10th. For additional nights or lunches, please contact the La Bergerie center (see contacts on top of page).
