Seminar – Prof. Touradj Ebrahimi (EPFL, Switzerland), Thursday, October 30

The MediaCoding team, from the SIS division, is pleased to invite you to the next i3S seminar, which will be presented by Prof. Touradj Ebrahimi from EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) on Thursday, October 30, from 10:00 to 11:00, in the conference room of the Algorithms/Euclid B building at the i3S laboratory.
The title, abstract, and a short biography of Prof. Touradj Ebrahimi are provided below.
We look forward to seeing many of you there for what promises to be a stimulating and insightful talk.
Title : Recent and emerging JPEG standards for the Age of AI
Abstract : Artificial intelligence is transforming the imaging landscape, from data acquisition to compression and trust verification. This talk will present three recent initiatives of the JPEG Committee that redefine how visual information is processed in the age of AI. JPEG AI introduces deep learning-based image compression with superior efficiency and adaptability. JPEG Trust establishes mechanisms for trust, authenticity, provenance, and integrity of digital content to counter misinformation and fraud. JPEG XE addresses the coding of event-based and neuromorphic visual data, enabling efficient and low-latency processing for next-generation AI-powered applications. Together, these standards illustrate JPEG’s strategic vision of combining intelligence, trust, and efficiency-and open new research opportunities for academia and industry in AI-driven visual processing, understanding and communication.
Bio : Touradj Ebrahimi is Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he leads the Multimedia Signal Processing Group (MMSPG). He serves as Chairman of the JPEG Committee (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1), where he steers international standardization in imaging and multimedia technologies. Prof. Ebrahimi's research activities focus on AI-powered imaging, trust in multimedia applications, security and privacy in visual communication, and assessment of quality of experience in multimedia. Under his leadership, the JPEG Committee has launched major initiatives such as JPEG Pleno, JPEG XS, JPEG AI, JPEG Trust, JPEG DNA, and JPEG XE, setting the foundation for next-generation imaging.
Prof. Ebrahimi is also Founder and Executive Chairman of RayShaper SA, a Swiss company developing advanced AI solutions for visual data understanding and trust. His career bridges academia, industry, and standardization, with a vision of ensuring that intelligent imaging technologies remain efficient, transparent, and human-centric.
